QURAN REFLECTION TOOLKIT 03: 10 LEVELS OF QURANIC READING [2:44] @Quran Club @Al Mustafa Welfare Trust There are 10 levels of engaging with the Qur’an — and most people never move past the first two. It’s clear: Muslims love the Qur’an, but they struggle with how to truly engage it. And here’s the warning Allah ﷻ gives us: ۞ أَتَأْمُرُونَ ٱلنَّاسَ بِٱلْبِرِّ وَتَنسَوْنَ أَنفُسَكُمْ وَأَنتُمْ تَتْلُونَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ ۚ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ ٤٤ Do you preach righteousness and fail to practise it yourselves, although you read the book? Do you not understand? (2:44) The Qur’an was never meant to be accessed in one dimension. It’s layered, living, and transformative — but only for those who climb its levels. So to begin this Quran Reflection Toolkit, here is the framework we’ll adopt: the 10 levels of Qur’anic engagement, in ascending depth. ________________________________________ 1) Istimaa’ (اسْتِمَاعُ) — Listening This is the entry point. Even passive listening carries light — but it’s the doorway, not the destination. 2) Tartīl (تَرْتِيل) — Recitation Now the tongue engages: measured recitation, careful pronunciation, reverence for sound. The Qur’an shapes how you speak, but it remains on the tongue. 3) Tafsīr (تَفْسِير) — Understanding Sound becomes meaning. You begin to grasp what Allah ﷻ is saying — not just how it sounds. But it remains intellectual, not transformative. 4) Tafakkur (تَفَكُّر) — Contemplation Now the Qur’an directs your thinking. When it speaks about the heavens, you pause and think about the heavens — until reflection leads you to Allah’s ﷻ greatness. Now the connection with Allah ﷻ begins 5) Tadabbur (تَدَبُّر) — Reflection This is when it becomes personal. You look behind the verse and ask: What does this āyah demand from me? What needs to change in my heart, in my life? 6) Tatbīq (تَطْبِيق) — Application The Qur’an leaves the page and enters your behaviour. Through discipline and repetition, it begins to show up in your character, choices, and restraint. All parts of who you are begin to align to God’s word; your body, mind, heart, emotions and spirit. 7) Tahfeez (تَحْفِيظ) — Preservation Not just memorising the words, but preserving them through how you live — so your life doesn’t contradict what you recite. You become a walking Qur’an, just like the Prophet ﷺ 8) Tajallī (تَجَلِّي) — Experience At this level, meanings are experienced. Verses about mercy, fear, angels, Prophets and the Hereafter are no longer abstract — they are witnessed and experienced. 9) Tahseen (تحسين) — Beautification The Qur’an’s is witnessed through you and spreads: to your family, friends, colleagues. People notice the peace and change — and they want it too. 10) Tablīgh (تَبْلِيغ) — Conveying Now you convey the Qur’an to society. Your words penetrate as they’re seen before they’re heard. They see it lived, and are drawn to it. Most people engage the Qur’an at the level of recitation and meaning. But transformation happens when the Qur’an is lived,
